Abstract
Politeness may differ from one language to another. However, it is still possible to apply some general rules of politeness to examine a certain language. This article tries to examine politeness in Javanese, especially for making request, through two main factors. They are through the cultural concepts and the linguistic properties. Therefore, being polite in Javanese means being able to choose the appropriate speech styles and to use the appropriate morpho-syntactic structures.
